The Same Story But Different Age
When we first think about the story Romeo and Juliet, the first image appear in our mind is a tragedy of love take place in Shakespeare’s time. However, it is always fun to find out something different among sundry of movies of Romeo and Juliet which mostly happened in 15th century. Therefore, the movie Romeo+Juliet which direct by Baz Luhrmann in 1996 jump out at me(www.rottentomatoes.com). The story is based on the play vision of Romeo and Juliet which means it share the same lines as the play in the movie. Nonetheless, the story of Romeo+Juliet start at a modern city called Verona Beach. From my personal views, the adaptation is great, because it is diverse from the play and easier for me to understand.
First, I think the movie does a good job on making a contrast between Montague and Capulet which see each other as enemy. They have different costume; people of Montague wear a more colorful clothes compare to people of Capulet who wear black and dark clothes most of the time. In addition, the way how they talk is different; Montagues talks fl and informal compare to Capulets who act malevolent and talk more rigorous. Also, one of the reasons I like this movie is because of its intelligence use on music. I think the music in the movie help to explain and show the emotion of the plot. For example, when Montagues and Capulet meet together the music become dramatic and aggressive; with the help of exaggerate performance during battle(How guns flying around their fingers), the movie become even more entertaining. Also, when Romeo first met Juliet besides a Fish tank, the music become peaceful and full of love which shows Romeo and Juliet fall in love in first sight to audience.
However, I feel a little bit awkward about the lines. Because of the story take place in a modern place, Chorus who read the prologue, read the prologue in the television as a news reporter and the prince become a police officer... However, the lines still stays the same as the play. It sometimes may cause confusion. For example, when Tybalt trying to fight with Romeo, they use guns but saying the word “sword”. Nonetheless, things have dual character, which means it can be helpful and confusing. By the help of the image and comparison with the settings in the movie, I feel like that the lines become much easier to understand. For example, I figure out how Mercutio died easily in the movie, because I saw how Romeo stop Mercutio and Tybalt hurt him. However, in the book this scene is not very clear to me, because there are only a few descriptions on how they fight with each other.
To sum up, I prefer the this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, because of how special it is, and it really help me to understand the play vision of Romeo and Juliet. Although, I always refuse to read tragedy, but isn’t the reason that tragedy make people remember it more deeply, so they won’t make a similar mistake. I think the story of Romeo and Juliet will exist no matter how time changes.
