Question Number 3:
Science versus Religion
Father Lawrence, a man who is both an alchemist and a priest. He believes in god, but also he studies on making medicine which can control a person’s death which is a taboo for his belief. Therefore, he can give Romeo and Juliet advice from both perspectives. However, in my opinion, he’s mind is partial to solve the problem with a more scientific way than a more religious way. Unfortunately, I think some of his improperly decision on Romeo and Juliet which is influence by both of religion and science cause a painful tragedy.
First, I think Father Lawrence gives Romeo and Juliet advice from two perspective. For example, before Romeo is banished, Father Lawrence tries to use a religious way to solve the argument between Capulet and Montague. He secretly helps Romeo and Juliet to get married, which he thinks that the holy marriage between Romeo and Juliet will make a peace between two houses, because religion is really powerful during that time period. His identity as a priest which is an authority in the city make his words powerful and be able to influence both Capulet and Montague. Unfortunately, because of the irrational decision Romeo makes which kills Tybalt, Father Lawrence need to use a scientific way to help Juliet. He use the poison which can fake the death to help Juliet get out of the marriage assign by her father. Father Lawrence’s different identity assist him to provide diverse solution for Romeo and Juliet.
Second, I think science sways Father Lawrence more than religion. In the book, he acts like a risk taker. He helps Romeo and Juliet secretly get married without telling their parents which is not a proper things a priest will do. He make poison for Juliet to get rid of a marriage, and he is keen on taking care of plants and making poison. In addition, he also discuss with Romeo about women in Act 2 Scene 3 which is not really appropriate for a priest to do. Therefore, I think science takes a big influence on Father Lawrence mind than religion.
Finally, I think father acts improperly towards Romeo and Juliet by both science and religion. In Act 4 scene 3, because afraid of Juliet’s threaten of death (which is a influence of religions, because he’s belief doesn’t allow him to let someone died because of him.), he choose to give Juliet a poison which may cause her death to help her run away and goes with Romeo( Which is a influence of science, because of the poison he gives). Therefore, I think both of religion and science influence Father Lawrence and let him makes several improper decisions.
To sum up, I think Father Lawrence is act more like a scientific person towards Romeo and Juliet. He help them by his influence in religion and his invention in science. However, the combine of science and religion effects on his decision cause a tragedy towards Romeo and Juliet.
